The black soldier fly is a unique insect with beautiful black, blue, and purple iridescent wings that remind me of obsidian. Obsidian is a volcanic glass known for transformation, resilience, and new beginnings. Qualities that reflect both the insect and my journey as a new business owner.
Obsidian Fly Company began as a project at Little Valley Aquaculture to help reduce feed costs for raising tilapia here in southern Idaho. After extensive research and working closely with black soldier fly larvae, I saw their incredible potential and asked the owners if I could take over the project. What started as a way to support sustainable aquaculture has grown into a small local business supplying live and dried black soldier fly larvae to reptile stores, feed stores, backyard chicken owners, and hobbyists throughout Idaho all while continuing to help feed Little Valley Aquaculture's fish.

To be honest.. it's the Frass (their poop!) It has amazing potential and I love that nothing goes to waste, from converting food waste into protein to creating a valuable product for gardens. I'm currently testing on a alfalfa field to see the difference between cow manure and fly frass and currently anxiously waiting on results.
I'm raising bugs on purpose! 🤣 I grow sustainable, protein packed, calcium-rich feeder insects for reptiles, arachnids, fish, backyard chickens and many more. I love educating people about black soldier fly larvae and showing that these little insects can make a big impact to the environment due to their feed coming from food waste, using less land and water to produce and using their by-product, Frass as an organic soil amendment.
What I love most about having my business in Idaho is the incredible local support. Growing up in a military family, I lived in many different states, but Idaho is the first place I experienced with such a strong culture of supporting local businesses and Idaho-made products.
Insect protein is on the rise and I'm excited to be part of it's future. My goal is to expand Obsidian, get the name out, and educate others about black soldier fly larvae, and continue contributing to the industry through research and innovation.
Im proof that if you have a dream and set your mind to it, you can make it happen. Dont be afraid to start small. To be honest, im still standing on the ledge getting ready to make my next leap. Time sure is a thief, so dont wait for the perfect moment.. just start.
